Look for mirrors with pretty details such as flowers, scrolls and cherubs…

Mirror, mirror on the wall… Most girls are addicted to shoes, handbags and fashion. My new interiors addiction? Gorgeous vintage and shabby chic mirrors. They instantly make living spaces feel roomier, add light to dark rooms and are a fantastic way of bringing a touch of individuality to your home , in a style to suit you.

What’s more, they are easy to find, inexpensive and of course, they can be up-cycled.. For a country cottage finish, go for pretty heart shaped mirrors. I found this little gem whilst rummaging around in a charity shop. This one was in a tacky gold colour, when I discovered it. But, I loved the heart shape, the roses  around the edge and the cute cherubs playing musical instruments. It’s these details which make it really special!

Transform a Vintage Mirror

I transformed it by painting over the gold in Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg Blue, then mixed Old Ochre with Old White to create an authentic shabby chic shade of cream. Taking a sheet of fine sandpaper, I then rubbed the areas which would naturally be subject to wear over time. Finally, I gently applied dark wax to the surface, rubbing the excess off, leaving enough to just create that authentic “aged” appearance. Touches of the original gold show beneath the paint, providing that touch of luxury. Et voila! A romantic and completely bespoke shabby chic mirror.

Gorgeous Vintage Mirrors

Vintage mirrors are bang-on-trend at the moment. When The Great Gatsby hit our screens, Art Deco pieces became extremely sought-after. Dating from the 1920’s and 1930’s they come in a variety of beautiful shapes and can be hung as a single decorative piece. Personally though, I think they look wonderful grouped together – a perfect way of adding that vintage vibe in a hallway or a bedroom.
